Classification of animal cell bioreactors

The key to large-scale industrialization and commercialization of animal cell culture technology is to design suitable bioreactor. Because of the great difference between animal cells and microbial cells, the traditional microbial reactor is obviously not suitable for large-scale culture of animal cells. First of all, it is necessary to provide sufficient oxygen for cell growth and product synthesis under low shear force and good mixing state.

At present, animal cell culture bioreactor with mainly include: bottles of incubators, plastic bags proliferation, packed bed reactor, a multilayer reactor, spiral membrane reactor, tubular reactor spiral rectangular channel, ceramic honeycomb reactor and fluidized bed reactor, hollow fiber and other membrane reactor, stirring reactor, gas lift reactor, etc.

Depending on how the cells were cultured, these responses can be grouped into three categories:
  • Reactors for suspension culture: such as stirred reactors, hollow fiber reactors, ceramic rectangular channel honeycomb reactors, and airlift reactors.
  • Reactor for adherent culture: such as stirred reactor (microcarrier culture), glass bead bed reactor, hollow fiber reactor, ceramic rectangular channel honeycomb reactor.
  • Reactors for embedded culture: such as fluidized bed reactors, solidified bed reactors.
